A large variety of bird species are present in the vicinity of Jacana Camp including wattled crane, saddle-billed stork, African darter, reed cormorant, king-fishers galore, slaty egret, several species of heron including the goliath and rufus-bellied variety and all the more common water-bird species. Ground hornbill are also spotted regularly when water-levels are low. Motor-boating and mekoro trips complement this activity, although many species can be viewed from the comfort of the camp itself. - View lodge details

The camp abuts a deep waterway and you will spot a good variety of water-birds from the camp itself. In season (Oct-Nov), there is a colony of carmine bee-eaters which nests in the bank of the river, and there can be some interesting interaction with opportunistic monitor lizards which lurk here. Swamp boubou, sacred and hadeda ibis, pied and malachite king-fisher, wattled plover, wattled crane, African darter, lourie bird and many other species are also present in this area. - View lodge details

Approximately 380 bird species have been recorded in this area, on our last trip, a few of the birds we spotted included black crake, white-faced duck, knob-billed duck, rufous-bellied egret, fish eagle, wattled crane, saddle-billed stork, African jacana, bateleur, brown snake eagle, tawny eagle, crimson-breasted shrike, as well as the ubiquitous blacksmith and crowned plover, francolin and guineafowl. - View lodge details

During the rainy season, Botswana's salt pans often fill with water to become shallow, saline lakes. Algae blooms and with it a species of tiny brine shrimp flourish and multiply – attracting an array of migrant water birds. It's a fascinating time to visit (even if the flamingos, pelicans and waders which are often talked about tend to come to Sua Pan, far from San Camp). - View lodge details

The birding in this area and in Chobe is excellent, and you could spend hours in the lodge itself or on the balcony of your room watching the birdlife which flutters through the forest reserve. A few of the species we spotted here included crested barbet, long-tailed shrike, pearl-spotted owl, great eagle owl, red and yellow-billed hornbills, and go-away birds. - View lodge details

Little Vumbura is a first-rate Okavango camp for bird-watching, as it is within an area of many different environments: from shallow- and deep-water floodplains and channels to dense, shady woodlands. We heard (but didn't see) a Pel's fishing owl, and our sightings included pygmy geese, carmine bee eaters, little bee eaters and plenty of owls. - View lodge details

As the camp is close to water, you can view a good variety of water-birds right from the deck! On our last visit, our bird-list included wattled crane, painted snipe, bateleur, eagle owl, hornbills, sacred and hadeda ibis, malachite kingfisher, and a very bold little crested barbet which allowed me to approach to less than a metre to photograph him! - View lodge details

The birding in Moremi Game reserve is excellent, with many notable species found in the area. The waterways are home to a variety of kingfishers, waders and darters – there are also good numbers of fish eagles, bee-eaters, slaty egrets, eagles and other birds of prey and the elusive Pel's fishing owl (which we caught a glance of here). - View lodge details
