Ibo is home to three thousand people, mostly living in traditional villages, just outside the original old town, most of which haven't changed for thousands of years. Fishermen still build teak dhows by hand on the beach, silversmiths hand-craft intricate jewellery using ancient techniques and tools in the fort, and curious children call out traditional greetings. A visit here isn't staged; it's a friendly way to experience a real slice of African island life. - View lodge details

A village tour can be arranged on request. This is a 3- to 4-hour activity including a visit to the local primary school. Your guide will introduce you to various important characters as you pass through the village including the headman and local policeman. There's also time to try the locally brewed beer on a visit to the local bar or visit the local craftsmen. - View lodge details

One of the activities offered at Edo's Camp is a visit to a nearby bushman village. The camp also offers the option to enjoy an evening of traditional bushman dancing. These shows are performed by a group set up as a community initiative and all proceeds go back into the local area. The group would need to be requested in advance of your visit and there would be an additional charge for this. - View lodge details

Kikadini Villas stands beside the laid-back Zanzibari village of Jambiani – which is, in our experience, the cleanest and most friendly village on the island. We can warmly recommend that visitors take an inexpensive village tour here – as these are very personal, low-key introductions to the local villagers with fascinating insights into their culture. - View lodge details

We went for a walk with the San bushmen which was nothing short of magical. We were accompanied by five bushmen and watching and listening to them was absolutely fascinating. Their deep knowledge and love of the bush was gently imparted, and watching them play a traditional tribal game at the end was a highlight. - View lodge details

At Nhoma Camp you're staying right by a Bushmen village. Here, the Ju/'hoan people have been a part of the camp's setup from the beginning, and benefit substantially from your visit. Time with these people can offer amazing insights into a hunter-gatherer culture that's very different to our own. - View lodge details

Likoma Island is home to local villages as well as the lodge. Village tours with a guide can be arranged, or you can take a map of the island and just set off – on foot or by bike – depending on how much you'd like to explore. We found the locals very friendly when wandering around on our own! - View lodge details

The inn is situated in an area with many small fishing villages – one of the highlights of my visit was a walk through these villages, surrounded by children, to watch the fishermen bring their catches in. Being taken by a local guide ensures that these walks are fascinating but not intrusive. - View lodge details

Chole Mjini was built to benefit its local community, and local people also helped to build the lodge. It is a great place to visit if you value being able to interact with village life. Don't miss the walking tour of the village, and then wander around on your own at any time you wish. - View lodge details

Community involvement is relatively uncommon on Zanzibar - but here you will find it done properly. Chumbe Island is a charity, so all the profits go back to the community, and the team of excellent local staff and guides here take real pride in their work, and in their island. - View lodge details
