Lake Malawi offers some of the best freshwater snorkeling and diving in the world. There are plenty of brightly-coloured, and often endemic “cichlid” fish; the lake is always warm and the currents are usually moderate. Being an island, Kaya Mawa is a particularly good spot for aquatic life – and dives from the shore and jetties are possible. - View lodge details

Unguja Lodge has a dive center on-site, run by a company with a reliable reputation on Zanzibar. Snorkellers and divers will enjoy the coral in the protected 'Menai Bay' area, whilst the most experienced divers can even head out to new dive sites, identified only by a GPS. The reefs are pristine and rich in a variety of fish and coral species; with a range of depths to suit beginner and experienced divers, and snorkellers too. Within the Mafia Island Marine Park – Kinasi offers great diving and snorkelling. Snorkelling trips inside Chole Bay usually cost $25, and take you out to a quiet and sheltered reef with an abundance of coral and fish. Diving can either be inside or outside of the bay, and is some of the best in East Africa. - View lodge details

Bazaruto has a NAUI Dive Centre and the reefs are rich in a variety of fish and coral species, and offer a range of depths and reef topography to suit beginner and experienced divers, and snorkellers too. The reefs around the northern end of Bazaruto Island are close and offer excellent diving and snorkelling. - View lodge details

The diving around Pemba is arguably some of the best diving off the coast of Tanzania. The Pemba Channel has some extremely challenging drift dives and is a great place to see some of the larger pelagic fish. The reefs around Mesali Island, just off Pemba, are also fantastic – if a little more gentle. - View lodge details

As with all of the lodges on Mafia – Pole Pole offers fantastic diving in the Mafia Island Marine Park. This is some of the best diving on the East African coast. When we last there, diving cost U$40 for a single dive and $300 for a 10 dive package (plus a $20 a day equipment hire fee). - View lodge details
