Onkoshi Camp will open in September 2008 as the Namibia Wildlife Resorts newest high-spec lodge. Situated on a secluded peninsular overlooking the silvery Etosha Pan, this is to be the first and only lodge within Etosha National Park. Up until now, there has only been camping and chalet accommodation in rest camps available to visitors to the park.
Namibia Wildlife Resorts opened a similar lodge within a national park in July 2007 - Sossus Dune Lodge. Based on the success here we expect good things from the new Onkoshi Camp.
As this lodge is so new, none of our team has visited it personally, but here is what we know about it.
Fifteen rooms built on elevated wooden decks will offer spectacular views over the Etosha Pan. Each will have a thatched roof, canvas walls and wooden-framed retractable doors. The spacious interior will be made up with twin beds, hanging space and an additional sleeper couch. Onkoshi Camp will have one honeymoon suite fitted with a king-size bed. All the rooms will be en suite with a stone bath with a view and both indoor and outdoor showers.
The main area, also on elevated wooden decks overlooking the Etosha Pan, will have a dining area, bar and swimming pool. Onkoshi Camp aims to be environmentally friendly. Guests will leave their vehicles at Namutoni Restcamp where they will be met by safari vehicles and transferred to Onkoshi. Solar energy will be used to light all the rooms and heat water.
Activities offered from Onkoshi Camp will include 4WD day safari drives and spot-lit night drives. Drives from the camp will allow guests the chance to explore exclusive areas of the park, not open to self-drive visitors. We are told that guided day and moonlit walks on the Etosha Pan will also be an option.
We will update this information once we have visited the new Onkoshi Camp, but please call us for more up to date information in the meantime.
