Central Highlands

 - Namibia

Between Windhoek and Etosha lies a region of gentle rolling hills, where many of Namibia's larger farms and ranches can be found. A few have been keeping game for a decade or more, but now others are introducing game, instead of cattle or sheep, and turning to tourism. This is very positive for Namibia's environment and visitors support it by their presence.

Namibia's guest farms and small lodges are all different, reflecting their individual hosts and locations. In this area, all offer comfortable accommodation with en-suite facilities, and most organise activities around local points of interest, such as unique rock formations and cave paintings. As you will be staying in someone's home, you will often dine with your hosts; an opportunity to gain an insight into their personal views of Namibia.

There are a few small towns here, including Otjiwarongo, Okahandja, Otavi, Omaruru, Outjo and Karibib – but most of the area is very rural and covered in rolling bush, punctuated by the occasional hill.

Just south of Otjiwarongo, Okonjima is a perennial favourite, famous as the genesis of the Africat Foundation which works with big cats. There are several different styles of accommodation here now – the original Main Camp, the Bush Camp, and even some new Family villas.

Further west, near the small town of Omaruru, Erongo Wilderness Lodge makes a lovely spot. It's a big attraction for those who love walking and hiking as it is located in very scenic (and easy to explore) mountains.

On the borders of Damaraland, Huab Lodge is a delightful, hospitable lodge run by experienced Namibian owners, Jan and Suzi. Jan's a great guide in his own right, and that alone makes a visit here worthwhile.

For something totally different, but at least as compelling as anywhere that we know in Africa, Mundulea Nature Reserve is the brainchild of top Namibian guide, Bruno Nebe. Accommodation is simple, but the experience is a magical one for true lovers of the bush.
